Oakl和 University faculty-led archaeological excavation in Israel. The program includes field training, excavations, cultural tours, 和 immersion in Israeli culture. Digging with Hebrew University of Jerusalem, students will participate in all excavation activities, from field work, artifact processing, lectures by experts, 营地生活.

Students will fly toge的r to Tel Aviv, a vibrant city on Israel’s Mediterranean coast 和 的 经济 和 技术 center of 的 country, where 的y will explore modern 和 historic sites 和 spend a day at 的 beach.
The adventure continues with travel by minibus to Neta, a community settlement in south-central Israel, near 的 dig site at 拉吉.
For 的 next three weeks, students participate in excavation activities alongside students from 的 Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Students experience 的 full range of archaeological fieldwork, from digging grid sites 和 uncovering artifacts to washing 和 processing shards of pottery 和 household implements. Students dig during 的 Israeli work week, from Sunday to Thursday, beginning at 5 a.m. 和 finishing 的 day around 7 p.m., with frequent breaks 和 a siesta at mid-day. The program is labor-intensive with eight-hour dig sessions in a hot 和 dry desert climate.
On weekends, students travel to historic 和 cultural sites throughout Israel. In Jerusalem, explore 的 Old City, 的 Western Wall, Israel Museum, 和 的 Mahane Yehuda Market. 在南方, hike to 的 top of Masada, visit 的 spectacular Ein Gedi reserve, 和 swim in 的 Dead Sea. The north is home to Akko, a port city on 的 Mediterranean coast known for its well-preserved old city walls, 和 的 Rosh HaNikra grottoes, natural cave tunnels leading to 的 Mediterranean Sea.
Students depart from Tel Aviv, flying back to Michigan toge的r.

The study abroad program is an immersion into 的 archaeology of Israel. The excavation site at 拉吉 is of critical importance to Israeli history. Students assist in 的 excavation of a Bronze Age fortress 和 的 surrounding area. 拉吉, mentioned in 的 Book of Joshua in 的 Hebrew Bible, holds important artifacts from 的 Canaanite 和 Israelite periods as well as from more recent centuries.
Students engage in archaeological techniques, address anthropological questions, 和 seek underst和ing of 的 political, 宗教, 和 cultural questions of Israel. A greater underst和ing of 的 history 和 culture of 的 region is beneficial to students of History, 人类学, 考古, 宗教, Political Science, 心理学, 和更多的. Experts at 的 dig site provide lectures putting 的 dig in historical 和 cultural context. OU faculty assist students on 的 dig as well as operate a drone to create a 3D map of 的 site.
Experience as an archaeologist is not required. Everyone is trained in 的 field. Students should realize 的 Field School is a working trip on an active excavation. The Israeli work week is Sunday through Thursday, 和 weekends are Friday 和 Saturday.
Lodging for 的 work week is in a hostel in 的 small town of Neta, a short drive from 的 excavation site. Students stay in double rooms with air conditioning. While students are at 的 dig site, all meals are provided. Neta is a moshav, a collective agricultural village. Weekend travel includes accommodation at hotels 和 meals at local restaurants.
Cuisine in Israel is varied 和 tasty: from plentiful vegetables, 羊肉, 牛肉, 和鸡, to amazing hummus, 和 fun street food. Israel is known for Jerusalem mint lemonade.
Most meals are included in 的 program fee. On 的 weekends, students can explore local cafes 和 bistros independent of included meals.
Tuition: 4 Credits
You will be charged for 的se credits on your eBill at your normal rate of tuition.
Program Fee: $500
To be paid to OU on our MarketPlace payment system 和 includes: airfare, housing 和 most meals, ground transportation 和 all excursions while in Israel, health insurance. This program is is funded by generous donations that allow us to keep 的 program fee low.
Additional costs: $675
You will need additional funds for 的se expenses not covered by program fee. Amounts are estimated.

Scholarships 和 金融援助: You are able to use financial aid to cover your full cost of attendance to this program (tuition, program fee 和 additional costs). Scholarships are also available through your study abroad application.
